The exam’s overall writing band score is based on the results of two writing tasks. You will be given a graph, chart, or diagram for the first task, and you must write a descriptive report of the data it contains. The word limit and value for this portion are lower than for the essay question (the second task). However, if done correctly, it will greatly help in meeting the band requirement in the writing.

  • Process Diagrams: This question type requires you to describe a series of stages in a process, such as how a product is manufactured or how a natural cycle works.
  • Combination Questions: These questions combine two or more of the aforementioned question kinds, for example, a process diagram and a map or a bar graph and a table. As this kind of question contains more details, it is simpler to examine the data.

Approaching the Task:

To approach the IELTS Writing task 1, you should follow the following steps:

Step 1: Analyze the Information:

Analyzing the data that has been given visually is the first stage. Examine the graph, chart, or diagram’s title and labels to determine what the information is about. Determine the data’s major patterns, trends, and discrepancies.

Step 2: Plan your Response:

Plan your response after you have studied the data. Choose a format for your response, and then logically and clearly arrange the information. You could choose to arrange the information in a chronological or numerical sequence, or group together pieces of information that are comparable.

Step 3: Write your Response:

Make sure to include an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs while composing your response. Generally, in the introduction, paraphrase the question and include an outline. Your introduction line and overview should preferably be combined in one paragraph. Use clear, concise language, proper grammar, and organization to describe and summarize the material in the body paragraphs.
