TYPES OF IELTS EXAM:

IELTS in Pakistan is divided into two types:

  1. IELTS Academic

The IELTS Academic test is the most commonly taken test by Pakistani students. Every year, a large number of students apply to international universities. The academic test is used as proof of their understanding of the English language and how strong of a grip they have on it.

It is important to demonstrate a good understanding of English because the students may find themselves lost in conversations, daily life dealings, activities, and lectures. Therefore, foreign universities have strict requirements for the IELTS exam for students who are coming from a non-native English background.

  1. IELTS General Training

The general training exam is undertaken by applicants who are not willing to study in a foreign country, but work there.

This test is slightly different from the academic test, with some changes in the writing section of the exam. However, the pattern of the exam remains the same for both academic and general training tests.

In a nutshell, the difference between IELTS academic and IELTS general training is that IELTS academic is used for taking admissions into foreign universities, whereas the IELTS general training test is taken for work purposes.

EXAM PATTERN:

The IELTS test in Pakistan is divided into 4 different parts:

  1. Writing
  2. Reading
  3. Listening
  4. Speaking

Writing:

The writing section of IELTS in Pakistan consists of two tasks. The first task is a descriptive writing task, where the students are provided with a picture, scenario, graph, or diagram.

The students have to describe the given object/subject in 150 words. The second task is an argumentative task, where the students put forward their points of view.

A statement, question, or argument would be provided and usually, the students are required to either agree or disagree with the statement and give their reasons. This section has a time limit of 60 minutes and both tasks are compulsory.

Reading:

The reading section consists of 40 questions. The questions are usually in the form of MCQs, fill-in-the-blanks, choosing true and false, and sentence-completing tasks.

The answers are to be extracted from a given scripture that is obtained from any source, be it a book or an online source. This text is unseen and requires strong reading skills to understand text completely. 60 minutes are provided to answer all 40 questions and there is no extension on the time.

Therefore, it is imperative to manage time properly while attempting the IELTS in Pakistan.

Listening:

The listening portion is fairly difficult, as it requires students to hear a recorded voice and jot down answers on the question paper. Commonly, students face difficulty in comprehending the recorded voice because of the unfamiliar accent.

Impeccable listening skills are of the utmost importance to pass the listening portion. As for the time limit, there is a 40-minute limit. The first 30 minutes are spent listening to the recording and noting down the answers to each question on the question paper.

The final 10 minutes are provided to transfer all the answers to the answer sheet.

Speaking:

The speaking section is the last task of the IELTS exam and takes only about 15 minutes. This includes speaking fluent English in a face-to-face setting with a certified examiner.

The examiner asks questions about the general introduction of oneself and then proceeds to ask questions about imaginary scenarios and select topics. For example, the examiner may ask you to talk about your favorite type of coffee and your favorite café.

IELTS SCORING:

The IELTS exam is scored on a 0-9 band system. For many universities, a minimum requirement of a 6-7 band is set, however, many schools or universities may require a higher band.

A 6 band means the candidate has a satisfactory grip on the English language, whereas a 7 band or higher means that the grip on the English language is quite good to perfect.
