Punjab Introduces Artificial Intelligence as a Mandatory School Subject

The Punjab government has announced the introduction of Artificial Intelligence as a compulsory subject in all public schools across the province, marking a significant shift in the direction of school education. 

The move is part of a broader effort to modernize the curriculum and prepare students for a future increasingly shaped by technology and automation.

The decision was announced by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who highlighted the need for students to develop skills that match global educational and economic trends. 

Provincial officials say the initiative is aimed at closing the digital gap by ensuring that students in government schools receive the same exposure to emerging technologies as those in private institutions.

What Students Will Learn

Artificial Intelligence will be introduced gradually across different grade levels, starting with basic concepts and progressing to more applied learning. 

At the primary and middle school levels, students will be taught foundational ideas such as logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and problem-solving. These lessons are designed to build curiosity and confidence rather than technical complexity.

At higher grade levels, the curriculum will include practical examples of how AI is used in everyday life, such as recommendation systems, smart devices, and digital assistants. Officials have stressed that the subject will focus on understanding and responsible use of technology, not advanced coding or complex algorithms.

Teacher Training and Curriculum Development

To support the rollout, the Punjab government has already trained over 1,000 teachers as AI master trainers. These educators will play a key role in training other teachers and ensuring consistent teaching standards across schools. 

Plans are also underway to appoint specialized AI instructors in public schools to strengthen delivery and reduce pressure on existing staff.

Curriculum experts are currently finalizing textbooks, teacher guides, and assessment frameworks. According to education authorities, the subject will be integrated in a way that complements existing courses such as mathematics, science, and computer studies, rather than adding unnecessary academic burden.

Infrastructure and Implementation Challenges

Despite the positive response, educators and parents have raised concerns about infrastructure limitations, especially in rural and underdeveloped areas. Many government schools still face challenges related to access to computers, electricity, and reliable internet connectivity.

Provincial officials have acknowledged these concerns and stated that infrastructure development will be carried out in phases. In the initial stages, the focus will remain on conceptual learning so that schools can introduce the subject even with limited technological resources.
