Fully Funded UK STEM Scholarships Announced for Women by British Council

The British Council is rolling out yet another round of its prestigious Women in STEM Scholarships for the 2026-27 academic year. They are providing fully funded opportunities for exceptionally talented women to undertake postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom.

The program aims to nurture women working in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and shed light on the ongoing worldwide gender disparity in these sectors.

This scholarship scheme, now in its sixth year, allows female students from eligible countries, including those in South Asia, to study for a one-year master's degree at a prominent university in the UK.

Such a move reflects British Council's commitment to encouraging diversity, innovation, and leadership in scientific research and technological development.

Women in STEM Opportunities

We expect to support around 90 scholarships around the world in about 30 different countries for the academic year 2026-27. Out of these scholarships, 25 will be allocated to candidates from South Asia, including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The program collaborates with five prominent UK universities which offer a wide range of STEM-related postgraduate courses.

The universities include the University of Edinburgh, the University of Glasgow, the University of Manchester, Queen Mary University of London, and Brunel University London among others. Applicants will need to apply directly to their chosen university and must meet the academic and admission requirements for the selected program.

This scholarship is fully funded and its main objective is to eliminate any financial barriers that might stop talented women from studying abroad. British Council states that each scholarship is worth a minimum of £40, 000 besides covering other main expenses involved in studying in the UK.

What the Scholarship Covers

The Women in STEM Scholarship provides comprehensive financial support, allowing students to focus entirely on their academic and professional development. The scholarship typically covers:

  • Full tuition fees for the selected master’s programme

  • Monthly living stipend for up to 12 months

  • International travel costs, including return airfare

  • Visa and health surcharge expenses

  • English language test fees, if required

  • Additional allowances, such as child support, in some cases

These benefits ensure that recipients can pursue world-class education at UK institutions without worrying about financial constraints.

Addressing Gender Gaps in STEM

The British Council introduced the Women in STEM Scholarship program to address the global underrepresentation of women in science and technology.

Despite progress in education and workforce participation, women continue to face challenges in accessing leadership roles and opportunities in STEM disciplines, such as gender bias, lack of mentorship, and insufficient support for work-life balance.

Through this initiative, the British Council hopes to strengthen female leadership in research and innovation while encouraging more women to pursue careers in scientific and technological fields. The program also promotes knowledge exchange between the UK and participating countries, contributing to global scientific advancement.

Speaking about the initiative, British Council representatives highlighted that the scholarship demonstrates their commitment to supporting talented women and enabling them to gain access to world-class education in the UK.

They emphasized that empowering women in STEM ultimately benefits economies, research communities, and societies at large.

Eligibility and Application Process

To be eligible, applicants must be women from a participating country and hold a relevant undergraduate degree in a STEM discipline.

Candidates are also required to meet the academic and English-language requirements of the university to which they apply. Additionally, applicants should demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to contributing to scientific development in their home countries.

Most participating universities require candidates to first apply for admission to an eligible master’s programme and then submit a separate application for the scholarship. Deadlines may vary by institution, though some universities have set April 2026 as the application deadline for the 2026–27 intake.

Impact of the Programme

Since its launch, the Women in STEM Scholarships program has partnered with more than 40 UK universities and awarded around 500 scholarships to women from across the world. The initiative has helped build a growing network of female scientists, engineers, and technology professionals who contribute to research and innovation in their home countries.

As applications open for the 2026–27 academic year, the program continues to provide a powerful platform for women to gain advanced education, develop leadership skills, and inspire future generations of girls to pursue careers in STEM fields.
