PTE Core - A New Contender in Town, Learn its format

Learn about PTE Core Test Format.

A month back, Pearson Test of English (PTE) announced a new product called PTE core. This test is specifically developed for applicants who want to move to Canada for work or immigration. In terms of mark distribution and duration, the test is quite comparable to the PTE Academic. However, there are a few changes to consider if you want to take the PTE Core exam.

Previously, candidates took PTE Academic for job and study purposes. PTE Academic was too academic subject centered, hence it did not adequately meet the needs of job applicants. PTE Core now includes general topics, making language assessments easier and more effective for the working class.


PTE Core Format:

The test has 4 sections (Speaking, Writing, Listening & Reading) which assess a candidate’s ability to work & sustain in Canada. Let’s look at the task distribution one by one.


Part 1: Speaking & Writing

The main difference between PTE Core and PTE Academic in the speaking segment is the “respond to the situation” question type. In PTE Academic, the question type retell a lecture has been replaced by this one.

For the writing aspect, both questions are slightly different and include emails. To write a summary, read the email and write a summary of it, whereas to write an email, write the entire email on the provided situation.

Read Aloud Speaking & Reading Read the passages out loud
Repeat Sentence Speaking & Listening Listen to a recording of a sentence. Then repeat the sentence
Describe Image Speaking You will see an image. Describe the image in detail within 40 seconds
Respond to a situation Speaking & Listening Listen to and read a description of a situation. Then answer a question about it with an extended response
Answer Short Question Speaking Listen to a question. Then answer with a single word or a few words
Summarise Written Text Writing & Reading Read the text. Then write a short 25–50 word summary
Write Email Writing Read the text. Then write an email in response



Part 2: Reading

Reading has the exact same question types as PTE Academic. However, the nature of the content would be more generic.

Reading & Writing: Fill in the blanks Reading & Writing You will see some text with several gaps. Choose the correct words from the drop-down boxes to fill in the gaps.
Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers Reading Read the text. Then answer a multiple-choice question on the content or tone of the text. You can select more than one response
Reorder Paragraph Reading You will see text boxes in a random order. Put the text in the correct order
Fill in the blanks You will see some text with several gaps. Drag words from the box below to fill the gaps
Multiple Choice, Single Answer Reading Read the text. Then answer a multiple-choice question on the content or tone of the text. You can select only one response



Part 3: Listening

Summarize Spoken Text Listening & Writing Listen to a recording. Then write a 20–30 word summary
Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers Listening Listen to a recording. Answer a multiple-choice question on the content or tone of the recording. You can select more than one response
Fill in the Blanks Listening You will see a transcript of a recording with several gaps. Listen to the recording and type the missing word in each gap
Multiple Choice, Single Answer Listening Listen to a recording. Select the paragraph that best summarizes the recording
Select Missing Words Listening Listen to a recording. Then select the missing word that completes the recording from a list of options
Highlight Incorrect Words Listening & Reading You will see a transcript of a recording. While listening to the recording, click on the words that are different from what is said
Write from Dictation Listening & Writing Listen to a recording of a sentence. Then type the sentence
