Malaysia Surpasses its Goal For New Applications From Abroad in 2022

New foreign student applications for 2022 have increased significantly year over year, according to Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS).

The government has tasked EMGS, which is housed inside the Ministry of Higher Education, with the task of marketing Malaysia as a destination for students. The overall number of international students enrolled in Malaysia as of 2022 is estimated to be between 130,000 and 170,000, according to a number of media publications, despite neither EMGS nor the Malaysian government released official statistics on the matter. By 2025, Malaysia wants to increase its student enrollment base to 250,000.

Until the end of December, EMGS reported receiving 51,270 applications “to study in Malaysian public and private education institutions,” compared to a more immediate aim of 50,000 foreign student applications for 2022. This represents a 27.5% increase over the number of applications received in 2021.
