The Continuing Impact of International Students

International students are a significant asset to the UK during their studies and long after graduation. The report found that 60% of international graduates in the UK work in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with a large proportion employed in education and healthcare.

These sectors benefit immensely from international graduate’s specialized skills and diverse perspectives.

Jessica Turner, CEO of QS, emphasized the need to reframe the discussion around international students.

“The debate has too often revolved around immigration, but international students are largely temporary visitors drawn to the high concentration of educational excellence in the UK,” Turner stated.

Insights from the International Graduate Outcomes Report

The international graduate outcomes survey highlights the conditions faced by more than 10,000 learners who graduated from 37 universities in the United Kingdom within the last six years.

One-third of the respondents said they went home after finishing their studies, while 43% claimed they stayed in the UK.

Moreover, out of the 3,919 who remained, 59% who held Graduate Route visas expressed improved job satisfaction compared to holders of other passports, signifying that these graduates enhance the economy in the UK.

The report also indicated that the holders of Graduate Route had some degree of attachment to the United Kingdom, with 73% indicating a strong affinity for the country.

59% of the respondents said that they would extend their business with the UK in the future. Such newcomers benefit the long-term sustainability of the UK economy as they help maintain professional connections.

FSAs include Alex Berka, the QS insights manager. At the 2024 IHEF, he also pointed out that ‘over half of the graduates found jobs in SMEs, the backbone of the UK economy.

It has been pointed out that the existing programs should be complemented by increased career assistance and job placements for graduates who plan to work in the United Kingdom.

Out of 432 graduates interviewed, only 47 percent opted for work placement experience. However, 53 percent believe that work experience and better services should be provided to maintain the UK’s competitiveness.

As Jessica Turner pointed out, this relationship must be reciprocated, as students put much into studying in the UK; hence, there are equal benefits for both the students and the university.

It was recommended that universities place more emphasis on employment at the international level so that their programs showcase flexibility that can help students thrive in the new future economy age of Artificial intelligence.
