IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a standardized test that assesses the language proficiency of non-native English speakers. It is important because it is widely accepted as a proof of English proficiency for immigration, study abroad, and work purposes by universities, governments, and professional organizations around the world.
As you students already know, two routes can be taken for going abroad.
· With IELTS
· Without IELTS
You can also say that one of the routes is “With a test” and one is “Without a test”. This is because, nowadays, subsequent to IELTS, numerous other tests are available such as the PTE, TOEFL, and various other tests.
Because of these routes, a lot of myths are spread among students where they are confused about whether taking the IELTS exam has a positive impact on their assessment of the application, some are misguided regarding fee structures being different for students who give the IELTS as opposed to students who don’t. Similarly, some students believe that their chance of getting a visa is dependent on IELTS.
In today’s article, we will be discussing each of these myths in detail and hopefully clearing any doubts that you may have regarding this topic.
Starting off with Canada, Canada does not allow any students or immigrants without IELTS. While there are many other tests being accepted by Canada, the Canadian SDS (Student Direct Stream) has a strict requirement for IELTS. There is a detailed video regarding Study in Canada available on our YouTube channel.
The first country that we will be discussing today is USA. In USA, multiple tests are acknowledged and accepted such as, Duolingo, IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, and Michigan test. To answer the question of whether there is any effect of IELTS on the visa, the straightforward answer is No.
IELTS has nothing to do with your visa grant process and vice versa. There are numerous success stories of Edify Group of Companies where many of our students have opted for the Duolingo test and are studying abroad today.
The embassies do not bother
themselves with what test the student has given or not. This is the
universities prerogative and they can only ask the student to choose a specific
test. The embassy cannot discriminate between someone who has given IELTS and
someone who has not. There are three types of requirements that are to be
fulfilled by you before applying for a university abroad:
Requirements to apply Abroad
1. Academic Requirements
2. Financial Requirements
3. English language requirements
If all three of these are accepted by the university, the embassy cannot deny a visa request to the students who have not given the IELTS exam.
Secondly, let us talk about the procedure of studying abroad in the UK. The UK has a point-based system. The point-based system is where the visa is granted on the basis of 70 points. The classification of points is:
· 50 points for Offer letter
· 10 points for bank statement
· 10 points for Language test
However, many universities do offer admissions on the basis of MOI/MOC. Therefore, there is no effect of IELTS on the visa.
Our team of professionals always advises the students to the fullest. The IELTS exam increases the options of universities where you can apply, whereas there are a selected number of universities that offer admissions without IELTS. This can also mean that some of the universities that do not require IELTS may have a higher fee than some universities that require IELTS. Hence, it remains a fact that no university can change its fee structure on the basis of whether a student has given IELTS or not.
If a university has provided an offer letter to you, the embassy cannot refuse your visa application solely on the basis of not having an IELTS classification. Each university has its own assessment criteria, similar to a doctor or a general physician. Just like a doctor asks you to go for a test, you can choose any lab to get your test reports. Similarly, Universities also have to check your English language proficiency and it is up to the University to accept or decline whatever test they deem fit.
Moving on to Australia, there are some universities where students are accepted without IELTS. Nowadays, students can easily see several cases on social media where different candidates from Pakistan have been granted Australian visas without IELTS. However, the policies can change from time to time.
In a nutshell, the answers to the commonly asked questions are:
· Are visas refused in absence of IELTS? The answer is NO.
· Is the fees for universities higher for students who do not give IELTS? The answer is NO.
· Are students with IELTS given preference over the ones who do not have IELTS? The answer is NO.
Whatever university accepts students without IELTS, they will definitely have some other criteria that is to be fulfilled. For example, they may ask for an MOI or a minimum of 4 years bachelor. The point is, there is always some other criteria.
Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out
