Germany has solidified its position as a premier destination for international students, witnessing a consistent enrollment rise over recent years.
As of the winter semester 2024/25, the country anticipates hosting over 405,000 international students, a significant increase from the nearly 380,000 recorded in the previous year.
The upward trend in international student numbers in Germany is evident.
In the winter semester of 2023/24, approximately 379,900 international students were enrolled in German universities, representing a 3% increase from the prior year.
This growth trajectory is expected to continue, with projections indicating that international students will surpass 405,000 in the 2024/25 winter semester.
India has emerged as the largest source of I international students in Germany, with over 49,000 Indian students enrolled in the 2023/24 academic year.
China follows closely, contributing nearly 39,000 students.
Other notable countries sending students to Germany include Türkiye, Austria, Iran, Syria, Russia, Italy, Ukraine, Pakistan, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Cameroon, and France.
Several factors contribute to Germany’s appeal among international students:
A survey conducted during the winter semester of 2023/24, involving approximately 20,000 international students and doctoral candidates, revealed that nearly two-thirds (65%) of respondents intended to remain in Germany after graduation.
Over a third (36%) had already made a definitive decision to stay, while only 8% considered it likely or certain that they would leave Germany upon completing their studies.
The remaining 28% were undecided about their post-graduation plans at the time of the survey.
Retention rates can be accurately determined for first-year students from non-EU countries, as they require a residence permit to study in Germany and are registered in the Central Register of Foreigners (AZR).
According to a recent calculation by the Federal Statistical Office, 55% of students recorded in the AZR who began their studies in Germany between 2006 and 2012 were still in the country five years later. After 10 years, this figure stood at 46%.
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) forecasts a continued increase in international student numbers.
Based on responses from over 200 German universities, DAAD anticipates nearly 405,000 international students in the 2024/25 winter semester, up from around 380,000 in the previous year.
Additionally, the number of newly enrolled international students is projected to rise from approximately 82,000 in the winter semester of 2023/24 to about 88,000 in the current year.
Germany’s commitment to providing quality education and favourable policies for international students has led to a steady increase in foreign enrollments.
Projections indicate that the number of international students will surpass 405,000 in the 2024/25 winter semester, and Germany continues to strengthen its position as a leading destination for higher education.
