Pakistan Launches Merit-Based AI Training Initiative Abroad for Students

The Government of Pakistan has announced a new merit-based initiative to send talented students overseas for training in artificial intelligence, underscoring a broader push to equip the country’s youth with cutting-edge technical skills. 

The announcement came from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during an event in Haripur where laptops were distributed to students under a national technology empowerment scheme. 

Addressing a crowd that included students, officials, and local representatives, the prime minister said the government is finalizing plans to select high-achieving students from all provinces to participate in advanced AI training programs abroad. 

These programs are expected to take place in Europe and China, two regions known for their robust AI research and development ecosystems. 

Shehbaz Sharif framed the initiative as part of Pakistan’s effort to develop a generation that is not only educated but globally competitive in fields that define the future.

He stressed that selection will be strictly merit-based, with no consideration given to geographical background or political affiliation.

In addition to the training initiative, the prime minister announced plans to establish a Daanish School in Haripur, modeled on similar institutions that aim to provide high-quality education with dedicated campuses for girls and boys. 

He also endorsed the establishment of a women’s campus at the University of Haripur, expanding opportunities for female students in higher education. 

These educational investments, the prime minister said, are part of a broader vision of balanced development. He highlighted that progress in Pakistan depends on nurturing talent across all regions and socioeconomic backgrounds.
