New Zealand is making it easier for international students to step into the workforce after finishing their studies by introducing new post-study work visa options.
These changes aim to provide students with greater flexibility and enhance their career development opportunities in the country.
One of the major updates is the introduction of a short-term graduate work visa, expected to launch in late 2026. This visa will allow graduates to stay in New Zealand for up to six months to look for a job or switch to another work visa.
It’s especially helpful for students whose qualifications don’t currently qualify them for the regular post-study work visa.
Alongside this, New Zealand is also expanding access to its existing post-study work visa. From late 2026, students who complete a Level 7 Graduate Diploma will be eligible to apply, as long as they already hold a bachelor’s degree.
This change provides opportunities for more students who wish to continue working in New Zealand after their studies.
The duration of the Post-Study Work Visa will depend on the qualification, but some graduates may be allowed to stay and work for up to a year.
Unlike the short-term visa, this option offers more stability and flexibility, including the possibility of supporting partners and dependent children.
