HEC launches mentoring programme for universities across Pakistan

Islamabad (March 18, 2026): The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has launched a new mentoring programme to support and improve universities across Pakistan.

This initiative aims to strengthen the education system by helping teachers, researchers, and university leaders develop better skills.

The program is called the Mentoring Programme for Universities (MPU) and has been introduced through the National Academy of Higher Education (NAHE), the training and development wing of HEC.

The program focuses on providing guidance, training, and support to faculty members and academic leaders.

Expansion of the earlier initiative

Previously, a similar mentoring programme was introduced only for women’s universities. Due to its success and positive feedback, HEC has now expanded the program to include all public and private universities in Pakistan.

This makes the program more inclusive and beneficial for a larger number of educators.

The new version of the program is also gender-inclusive, meaning both male and female teachers and leaders can participate and benefit equally.

Main objectives of the programme

The mentoring program has several important goals aimed at improving higher education in Pakistan. These include:

  • Developing the professional skills of university teachers
  • Training academic leaders to manage institutions effectively
  • Promoting a culture of mentorship, where experienced teachers guide junior staff
  • Encouraging collaboration and the sharing of knowledge among universities
  • Improving teaching methods and research quality

Through this program, experienced professionals will act as mentors and provide guidance to less experienced faculty members. This will help build confidence, improve teaching techniques, and support career growth.

Leadership and launch event

The program was officially launched at a ceremony held in Islamabad. The event was attended by senior officials, including the Chairman of HEC, Mukhtar Ahmed, as well as vice-chancellors, professors, and education experts from various universities.

During the event, HEC officials highlighted the importance of mentorship in building a strong academic system. They said that mentoring helps individuals learn from each other’s experiences and improves overall performance.

Importance of the programme

HEC believes that this mentoring program will bring long-term benefits to Pakistan's higher education sector. It is expected to:

  • Improve the quality of teaching in universities
  • Strengthen leadership and management skills
  • Support young teachers in their professional journey
  • Create a positive and cooperative academic environment
  • Raise the overall standard of education in the country

Officials also emphasised that strong universities play a key role in national development. By investing in teachers and academic leaders, Pakistan can build a better future for students and society.

Conclusion

The launch of the Mentoring Program for Universities is an important step by HEC to improve higher education in Pakistan.

By focusing on training, mentorship, and collaboration, the program aims to create a more effective and modern education system that meets international standards.
