Major LLB Degree Scandal in Pakistan: University Invalidates 1,184 Law Students' Records

KHAIRPUR: Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) in Khairpur has taken major action against irregularities in legal education by cancelling the academic records of 1,184 LLB candidates after an investigation uncovered unauthorized entries in the university's examination system.

According to an official notification issued on October 16, 2026, the university declared the disputed academic records invalid, meaning that degrees, transcripts, examination results, and other certificates based on these entries will no longer be recognized as legitimate university documents.

The development has raised serious concerns about fake LLB degrees in Pakistan, academic transparency, and the verification of qualifications within the country's legal profession.

Over 1,100 LLB Academic Records Declared Invalid

The university's investigation identified irregular academic records belonging to students enrolled in both three-year and five-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programmes.

Of the 1,184 cancelled records, 658 belonged to candidates from the three-year LLB programme, while the remaining 526 were associated with the five-year LLB programme.

The investigation covered the 2016, 2017, and 2018 passing years for the three-year programme and the 2017 batch of the five-year programme.

University authorities concluded that the disputed records had been entered into the examination system without proper authorization.

University Investigation Exposes Irregular Academic Entries

The inquiry was initiated following decisions made during the university Syndicate's 92nd meeting on April 11, 2026.

A special investigation committee examined academic documents and records maintained by Shah Abdul Latif University and its affiliated law colleges.

The verification process included scrutiny of examination information, attendance records, fee documentation, and other relevant evidence.

Following the investigation, the committee determined that 1,184 academic records did not meet the university's requirements for lawful recognition.

Separate reporting indicated that the university also verified 64 candidates' records as genuine, protecting their academic standing.

Students Given Opportunity to Verify Their LLB Credentials

Before cancelling the disputed records, the university provided affected candidates with an opportunity to establish the authenticity of their academic credentials.

In July 2026, SALU published a public notice through its official website and national newspapers.

Candidates were instructed to submit supporting documents within 15 days to demonstrate that their educational records had been legitimately issued.

The inquiry committee subsequently evaluated the submitted applications and supporting evidence.

However, the review concluded that the 1,184 disputed entries could not be accepted as part of the university's lawful academic record.

LLB Degrees, Transcripts and Certificates Declared Void

Following the findings, university authorities announced that all educational documents issued on the basis of the unauthorized records would be considered invalid.

These include LLB degree certificates, provisional certificates, examination results, academic transcripts, and other related documents.

The decision means that affected candidates cannot rely on the cancelled records as proof of an officially recognized law qualification from Shah Abdul Latif University.

The university's notification also identifies affected candidates and their affiliated institutions, including law colleges located in Jacobabad, Kandhkot, and Kashmore.

HEC and Pakistan Bar Council Informed About Fake Degree Findings

Shah Abdul Latif University has formally communicated its decision to the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the Pakistan Bar Council, and provincial bar councils.

Relevant authorities in Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan have been informed about the cancelled academic records.

The university has also notified the principals of the affiliated law colleges concerned.

The development could prompt further examination of professional credentials where individuals have used the disputed academic records to seek enrolment in the legal profession.

However, the university's cancellation of academic documents does not automatically establish that all 1,184 affected candidates are practising lawyers or that their professional licences have been revoked.

Any separate disciplinary or enrolment-related decisions would fall within the jurisdiction of the relevant regulatory bodies.

Fake Law Degrees Raise Questions About Pakistan's Legal Education System

The discovery has renewed concerns regarding the monitoring of law colleges, examination procedures, and degree verification mechanisms across Pakistan.

Legal education plays a crucial role in preparing future advocates, judges, and other legal professionals. Irregularities involving academic credentials can undermine confidence in the qualifications required to enter the profession.

The case also highlights the importance of maintaining accurate university records and strengthening coordination between educational institutions and legal regulatory authorities.

A transparent and reliable verification process is particularly important for students who complete their studies through affiliated law colleges.

Shah Abdul Latif University Previously Faced Similar Degree Issues

The latest development follows reports of another major cancellation of LLB credentials by Shah Abdul Latif University.

According to earlier media reports, the institution cancelled approximately 1,280 LLB degrees in 2025 over concerns related to academic irregularities.

The latest action indicates that the university continues to investigate questionable educational records and take steps to address unauthorized academic entries.

It also reinforces the need for stronger oversight of affiliated institutions and improved systems for verifying educational qualifications.

What Happens Next for Affected LLB Candidates?

With the cancellation notification communicated to the HEC and bar councils, the next steps may involve further verification and regulatory review.

Candidates whose academic records have been declared invalid may need to seek clarification from the university or pursue any remedies available under applicable rules.

Meanwhile, legal regulatory bodies may examine whether any affected individuals obtained professional enrolment using credentials that are no longer recognized by the university.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of academic accountability, reliable degree verification, and transparency in Pakistan's higher education system.

The cancellation of 1,184 LLB academic records represents a significant development in efforts to identify irregular qualifications and protect the credibility of legal education in Pakistan.
