EU Plans to Expand Legal Migration and Job Opportunities for Pakistanis in 2026

ISLAMABAD: The European Union has expressed interest in improving legal migration opportunities for Pakistani citizens, focusing on skilled employment, easier visa procedures, and stronger cooperation between Pakistan and European countries.

European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner discussed these developments during his October 2026 visit to Pakistan, highlighting the importance of establishing safer and more accessible migration pathways.

EU Calls for Improvements in Schengen Visa Process for Pakistanis

The European Union has acknowledged growing concerns regarding the high Schengen visa rejection rate in Pakistan.

According to Brunner, approximately 50% of Pakistani Schengen visa applications are refused, indicating challenges within the existing application system.

He stressed that European authorities should improve visa appointment availability and processing efficiency.

Meanwhile, Pakistani applicants must ensure that supporting documents are accurate, complete, and authentic to improve their chances of approval.

Europe Seeks Skilled Pakistani Workers to Address Labour Shortages

European countries are experiencing workforce shortages due to aging populations and changing labour market demands.

Brunner explained that legal migration could help European economies address these shortages while creating employment opportunities for qualified Pakistani professionals.

The EU is particularly interested in improving cooperation that connects international workers with suitable employment opportunities.

However, individual European countries will continue determining their specific visa and employment requirements.

EU-Pakistan Talent Partnership Could Create New Employment Pathways

The EU-Pakistan Talent Partnership remains an important initiative for strengthening professional mobility between Pakistan and Europe.

Brunner acknowledged that the partnership has not yet achieved its full potential.

He emphasized improving skills development and matching Pakistani workers' qualifications with European employers' requirements.

Italy was highlighted as an example of a European country offering employment opportunities to foreign workers.

Further cooperation could potentially strengthen legal recruitment opportunities across additional EU member states.

Illegal Migration from Pakistan to Europe Declines Significantly

Pakistan and the European Union have also reported progress in reducing irregular migration.

According to Pakistani officials, illegal migration from Pakistan toward Europe declined by 64% during the previous 18 months.

Brunner separately reported a reduction exceeding 50%, attributing the improvement partly to stronger bilateral cooperation.

Both sides emphasized combating human trafficking networks and discouraging dangerous migration routes.

EU Warns Pakistani Youth Against Human Trafficking

The European commissioner warned Pakistani citizens against relying on human smugglers to enter European countries illegally.

He highlighted the life-threatening dangers associated with irregular migration routes through North Africa and the Mediterranean.

Instead, young Pakistanis were encouraged to develop professional skills, pursue education, and explore authorized migration opportunities.

What Does This Mean for Pakistani Job Seekers?

The discussions indicate growing European interest in attracting qualified Pakistani workers through regulated migration channels.

However, no new EU-wide work visa scheme or automatic visa approval policy was announced.

Pakistani applicants should continue checking official embassy websites, employment requirements, and available legal migration programmes.

Stronger cooperation between Pakistan and the European Union could eventually improve employment mobility, visa accessibility, and opportunities for skilled Pakistani professionals seeking careers in Europe.
