Pakistan to End Machine-Readable Passport Issuance, Introduces New Digital Travel System

Islamabad: Pakistan is preparing to phase out the issuance of traditional Machine-Readable Passports (MRPs) as the country moves towards a more advanced electronic passport system. 

The decision is part of ongoing efforts to modernise travel documentation, improve security standards, and bring Pakistan’s passport system in line with international practices.

Shift Towards Electronic Passports

The government’s decision reflects the growing global shift from older passport systems to biometric and electronic travel documents. E-passports are designed with advanced security technology, including an embedded electronic chip that stores the passport holder’s personal details and biometric information.

This technology helps strengthen identity verification, reduces the chances of passport fraud, and allows immigration authorities to process travellers more efficiently at international borders.

Existing Passports Will Remain Valid

Authorities have clarified that current Machine-Readable Passports will not become invalid immediately. Citizens holding existing passports can continue using them until their expiry date.

The transition will take place gradually to ensure that travellers, including overseas Pakistanis, students, business professionals, and tourists, do not experience difficulties while shifting to the new system.
