Australia Tightens Dependant Visa Rules for International Students

Australia is introducing stricter rules for international students who want to bring family members with them. The changes are part of the Australian government’s wider plan to reduce migration and make the student visa system more focused.

Under the proposed Australia student visa dependant rules, most international students will no longer be able to bring dependants to Australia.

However, some students will be exempt from these restrictions, including PhD students, certain Pacific and ASEAN nationals, students sponsored by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or Defence, and some foreign government scholarship students.

What Will Change for International Students?

One of the biggest changes is related to family members joining students after their student visa has already been granted.

According to the Department of Home Affairs, family members will face restrictions on later applying as secondary applicants for a Student visa or Temporary Graduate visa. The restrictions are expected to apply to current and future student and temporary graduate visa holders, both inside and outside Australia.

Students who are already living in Australia may receive protection through special arrangements designed to avoid separating existing families.

These changes mean future international students should carefully check the latest dependant visa requirements before choosing Australia as their study destination.

Why Is Australia Changing Student Visa Rules?

The Australian government is trying to reduce net overseas migration. It is targeting net overseas migration of around 245,000 in 2026–27 and 225,000 in 2027–28. The government has also been focusing on reducing “visa hopping”, where people move repeatedly between different temporary visa categories.

At the same time, Australia plans to maintain a National Planning Level of 295,000 international student commencements for 2027. This has raised questions about how Australia will balance international student numbers with its lower migration targets.

What Does This Mean for Students Planning to Study in Australia?

Students planning to study in Australia should understand that visa rules are becoming more controlled. Students who want to travel with a spouse, children or other eligible dependants may face additional restrictions depending on their course and visa situation.

Applicants should also carefully choose their course and future career pathway, as Australia continues to focus more strongly on qualifications connected with skills that are needed in the country.

International students should always check the latest Australian government visa requirements before submitting an application, particularly if they plan to bring family members.
