2027 Fulbright Scholar Program Opens for Pakistanis

Pakistani academics and researchers have a new opportunity to strengthen their international research and teaching experience as applications are now open for the 2027 Fulbright Scholar Program in the United States.

The program is being administered in Pakistan by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) and is funded by the U.S. government. 

Selected scholars can spend up to 10 months at a U.S. college or university, where they may undertake postdoctoral research, teach at university level, or combine both activities.

Who Can Apply?

The opportunity is available to Pakistani citizens who are currently living and working in Pakistan.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or another terminal degree in their relevant academic discipline. For the 2027 cycle, the qualification must have been completed at least two years before applying.

USEFP is accepting applications from scholars at different stages of their academic careers. This includes early-career faculty members and researchers with around two to seven years of post-Ph.D. experience, as well as senior academics with approximately eight to 15 years of experience after completing their doctorate.

The program welcomes applicants from almost all academic disciplines. However, clinical medicine is not included among the eligible fields.

What Does the Fulbright Scholar Program Offer?

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work with academics and institutions in the United States while developing their professional and research networks.

Depending on their proposed project, scholars may focus on research, university teaching, or a combination of both during their stay.

The program is also designed as a cultural and academic exchange. Pakistani scholars are expected to introduce U.S. students, faculty members and communities to different aspects of Pakistan's society and culture. 

After completing the program, participants are encouraged to use and share their international experience within their institutions and communities in Pakistan.

Financial Support for Selected Scholars

The Fulbright Scholar grant provides financial assistance to support participants during their stay in the United States.

According to published program information, the grant can include air travel, a living allowance, health insurance and an incidental research allowance. Financial support may also be available for one accompanying dependent, while USEFP provides assistance to selected scholars during the visa process.

Research Proposal Plays an Important Role

Applicants are expected to submit a clear and well-developed proposal explaining what they intend to accomplish during their time in the United States.

Those applying for research opportunities should clearly outline their research objectives and explain how the proposed work relates to their academic or professional activities in Pakistan.

Applicants interested in teaching are also expected to demonstrate relevant university-level teaching experience.

In addition to the application form, candidates generally need to provide supporting documents and three reference letters as part of their submission.

Important Eligibility Restrictions

Applicants should carefully review the eligibility criteria before submitting an application.

Those who completed their Ph.D. less than two years ago are not eligible for the 2027 cycle. Certain restrictions may also apply to candidates who have recently spent an extended period in the United States for research or education.

Other eligibility conditions relate to U.S.-Pakistan dual nationality, certain family relationships with U.S. citizens or permanent residents, employment connections with Fulbright-related organizations, and applicants who are already studying in the United States or holding residence or employment status in another country.

Applicants Advised to Prepare Their Own Work

Candidates are also expected to maintain academic integrity throughout the application process.

The 2027 program guidance warns applicants against relying on generative AI tools to prepare application essays. Plagiarism, false information, fraudulent publications or other forms of misrepresentation may lead to disqualification.

Applicants should therefore ensure that their proposals and application materials genuinely represent their own academic experience, objectives and ideas.

Application Deadline

The deadline to apply for the 2027 Fulbright Scholar Program is Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

Applications must be submitted online through the USEFP application system. Candidates who intend to apply should prepare their research or teaching proposal, supporting documents and references well before the closing date.

The Fulbright Scholar Program provides Pakistani academics with an opportunity to gain international research and teaching exposure, collaborate with U.S. institutions and develop academic connections that may continue well beyond the scholarship period.
