The New TOEFL Scoring System (January 2026)
Starting January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT introduced a new 1–6 band scale with half-point increments, aligned with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Old Scale (Before Jan 21, 2026)
Each section scored 0–30
Total score: 0–120
Total = sum of four sections
Score delivery: 4–8 days
No direct CEFR alignment
New Scale (From Jan 21, 2026)
Each section scored 1–6 (half bands)
Overall score: 1–6 scale
Overall = average of four sections (rounded)
Score delivery: within 72 hours
Direct CEFR alignment
Example: If you score 5.0, 4.5, 5.0, and 4.5 → average = 4.75 → rounded to 5.0 overall band
Transition Period (2026–2028)
During this period:
Score reports show both old (0–120) and new (1–6) scales
Helps universities adapt to the new system
The old scale will be phased out after 2028
