Welcome to the beginning of a new era in worldwide education. Bridget Phillipson, the UK’s minister of education, has stated that international students will no longer be exploited as “political footballs.”
At the recent Embassy Education Conference on July 23, she clarified the new government’s open approach to overseas students.
The government of Keir Starmer is determined to abandon the “mixed messaging” of previous administrations. At the conference, Phillipson stressed a more friendly approach to overseas students.
For far too long, international students have been considered political pawns; their tuition dollars are appreciated, but their presence is disliked. Phillipson claims that the incoming government will adopt a different approach and communicate clearly.
She stated unequivocally, "International students are welcome in the United Kingdom. This new government appreciates their contributions to our colleges, towns, and country.
This feeling is consistent with what she said in an interview with the BBC’s Today programme last week when she committed to keep the Graduate Route open under the Labour government.
Phillipson reaffirmed that international students could stay in the UK after finishing their studies—two years on a graduate visa for most and three years for those with a PhD.
This is an excellent opportunity for overseas students to obtain practical work experience and contribute to the UK economy.
However, she warned that while overseas students would “always be welcome,” the government is committed to carefully controlling migration.
This balanced strategy addresses some voters who supported the anti-immigrant Reform Party in the recent general election.
Phillipson promised that the incoming government would see colleges as a public good rather than a partisan battleground.
This marks a dramatic departure from previous governments, frequently utilising higher education for political benefit. She encouraged UK institutions to develop global alliances to provide transnational education.
“Our foreign collaborations are critical to this effort to distribute opportunity far and wide. The more we collaborate, the more improvement we will see globally - partners in the quest for better,” she stated.
She also underlined the value of collaborating with foreign partners to deliver courses across borders.
Phillipson took the time to recognise the bravery of international students who travel the world for their studies.
She recognised the courage required to relocate to a new culture, away from home and family, to pursue new talents and horizons.
"And I am overjoyed that so many people in the UK want to jump. “And we will do everything we can to help them succeed,” she said.
Her statements attracted acclaim from various educational stakeholders. Andy Howells, chief marketing officer of NCUK, was delighted by the secretary of state’s focus on the importance of international students.
He stated that retaining the Graduate Route is extremely useful for students considering studying in the UK, providing them with the certainty and comfort they require.
Anne Marie Graham, UKCISA’s CEO, also applauded the obvious recognition that international students are a constructive influence in UK education and society.
She praised the new government for declaring that international students are welcome and cherished, acknowledging their significant cultural and economic contributions.
This new approach by the UK government is essential to creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment for overseas students.
It strengthens the United Kingdom’s status as a top international education destination, attracting students from all over the world looking for world-class academic and cultural opportunities.
"Like many overseas students, I came to study in the UK for a world-class academic and cultural experience.
“It’s heartening to hear that our social and financial contributions to universities and communities are being positively recognised, and to feel that the UK government is welcoming all that international students bring,” stated the UKCISA student advisory committee chair.
The UK’s new approach to overseas students represents a substantial change toward inclusivity and recognition of their contributions.
This shift offers a brighter future for global education in the United Kingdom, creating a more friendly and supportive atmosphere for students worldwide.
